The new two major bargains with iPod nano 6th generation are the multi-touch feature and the size reduction of 43 percent. The click wheel is no longer required with the incorporation of the multi-touch technology that is used with iPad, iPhone and iPod. This reduces the size of iPod nano 6th generation by almost half, giving an entire facelift.
When IPod nano’s first generation was introduced in 2005, Apple sold its first Million in 17 days. It was a big hit because of its size and portability as users can easily carry it everywhere they go and of course, reliability for best music experience and quality. Now, iPod nano 6th generation weigh just 21.1 g and is ready to wear. It won’t be a burden anymore in your pocket while walking or running along the pathway. It comes in two capacities of 8GB and 16GB, and offer six color choices (blue, pink, green orange, silver and graphite).
IPod Nano 6th Generation Review – The Transition
Size: IPod nano overall size has been reduced by 43 %, and the screen display size from 2.25 in (5th Generation) to 1.54 in (6th Generation). It is extremely small and portable that I never fail to misplace it easily. I even often forget that it is in my pocket and some day I might just wash it. Well, that just me, but it is very convenient to clip, forget and enjoy music as I do my routine at gym or go jogging. IPod nano 6th generation has a build-in clip to secure on your cloths away from direct contact with sweat which is nicely done.
Multi-touch: Multi-touch screen is the future of all devices, and it is trendy and desirable. The click wheel is gone and the multi-touch interface has been integrated with much anticipation to join the league of Apple’s touch devices. Personally, I see no advantage in functionality, and in fact I find the click wheel quite more functional to select or skip songs by directly pressing the desired button.
Initially, before the software upgrade I need to first turn on the screen with the Sleep/Wake button to skip or select songs with the iPod nano 6th generation. Now, the latest software update of version 1.1 allows user to use Sleep/Wake button as function for playing the next song by double clicking. Anyway, you still need to wake your nano to rewind or play previous song. But is that too much an effort? Nope.
Users can also simply hold the Sleep/Wake button continuously for some few quick seconds to turn off. Earlier, before the software update you can’t completely turn off your nano, just sleep and wake button. This was a welcome update among users and many are glad to know that Apple acted promptly to address the issue. Otherwise, it was draining the battery’s life very quickly when you forget to stop the music or radio.
Screen Display: IPod nano 6th generation features a smaller screen and lower resolution of 240×240 pixels but a higher pixel density of 220 pixels per inch. It’s nice to have a better screen display, but I won’t bother much as the screen is too small for any quality experience to watch videos. If you want a device for video go for iPod Touch 4G
IPod Nano 6th Generation Review – Withdrawn Features
No click wheel, build-in voice recorder, build-in speaker, games, camera or video playback with the new iPod nano 6th generation. Are we missing a lot of features with the changeover? Well, it looks like we are indeed missing some features, but I don’t feel a loss.
The multi-touch replaced the click wheel and is seamless for navigating music in spite of the small screen. I never use iPod nano for videos or photos except for trying the feature the first day I bought iPod nano 5G. The video quality was poor couple with the pain to watch with 2.25 inch screen. And, for the same reason I don’t play games. Most of the non musical features withdrawn are additional attraction and unused by many including me.
What is important is that it has retained features like FM Radio, Genius Mixes and Dock connector to enjoy hi-fi music, and added some to make iPod nano truly portable music player with better quality sound and functionality. At present, iPod nano price for 6G is approximately 40 percent cheaper than iPod nano 5G new price. So, you are not paying more for less.
With your iPod nano 6G you can still view photos, touch the screen to know the name of the song or artist with VoiceOver, listen to FM radio, audio books and podcasts.
IPod Nano 6th Generation Review – Bottom line
If you are looking for more entertainment beyond great music experience than iPod nano 6G is not advisable. Apple’s other products such as iPod touch or iPhone will do more justice for a compelling entertainment device.
However, if you want a real portable music player with lots of storage capacity and you don’t need camera, apps, games or videos, you are going to love it. Its light weighted and so tiny and a great little device at gym or while running. The advantage of the new nano over the previous generation is clearly showing with the easy to use touch interface and the extremely portable size. Definitely a good buy for the money at the new price.
